      I didn't capture this effect in the picture very well.  I spent a fair amount of the race with my feet dangling off of the front of the boat in the (somewhat) glacier-fed Chena River.  There was an odd (at least to me) effect: All the glistening rays in the water seemed to point toward me.  It was a really cool effect; I'm sorry that the picture didn't come out very well.

      This power plant is visible from pretty much anywhere in Fairbanks.  It was a prominent features of my earlier nighttime sojourns in Interior Alaska (aurora chasing).  I have subsequently learned that it is called "The Golden Valley Generating Station"--or something like that.  The flashing red lights have a weird property that I've never fully figured out: They will flash a bit faster after midnight--almost as if something like "military time" was entered into a program controlling it. . . .
